The storm has finally calmed and it’s now time to get back behind the easel. I painted this “Sycamore” last week and am looking forward to enjoying some more time dancing with the paint brushes.

Been quite a bit of activity since the last Push Pull Print art show. As some of you know, Eric Fausnacht and I have teamed up and started a “pillow” company. Not just yer average pillow. While I’ve been knocking around a squeegee for the past 20+ years Eric has been developing his branding as a painter. In doing so he sees a lot of juried arts and craft shows. I started oil painting about 5 years ago and in doing so was looking for a way to get my paintings out to the public. I believed it was through the venue of galleries. Not so easy to just knock on the front door and say here’s my paintings I’ll be back in two weeks for the checks!

I decided instead to host my own art shows and become the gallery. Have the public and artists come to me. The idea would be “Push Pull Print”. Open to artists of all levels, just one catch – you had to screen print your art! More info. One of the shining stars was Eric. He would come in with idea after idea of what he could make. I was in it for the “art” so when he came to me and said he wanted to do pillows….I wasn’t quite sure what would happen. As it turns out though the two of us had way too much fun working together and in doing so we were able to transfer that fun to the images we print on pillows. It seems to be contagious. A lot of “fun” compliments are tossed our way.

This is just one of the things that has been keeping me busy. Check out the pillow line at: www.ericandchristopher.com. I’m looking forward to finishing up some paintings I started last Spring and maybe just maybe a new relationship with another gallery. Stay tuned and I’ll do my best to keep you posted.

The last element on Earth I expected was never even a consideration in my mind. If I were to sit down and create scenarios of possible bumps in the road I would never suspect to look up and catch the hub cap about to hit me in the head.

We set it up for Ryan to come print. Both of us are separately organizing this and completing that. An orchestrated management of time and duties that just don’t leave much room to step out of bounds and take a time out. Ryan shows up “You’re going to kill me”

My subconscious quickly acknowledges that Ryan is standing in my front door explaining with empty hands just why I will be frustrated with him. The thought didn’t take long to pass the synaptic maze and make it way to my conscious verbal mind. His hands were empty….

Where was his $%@#?!?!

No time for time outs and tea breaks we made it work. Come see what we conjured up this Saturday.

She came into the studio and has done what no other artist has yet to do in regards to the Push Pull Print art show. She did not have an image for her screen…..instead she showed up with flowers, vines and petals from her gardens. She placed them under an entirely open screen and printed on top of them leaving them to be her stencil. After the first print she moved them around in a different configuration and did this so for a couple of hours. Doreen told me she wanted to let go and attempt to not have so much control over her piece. She is always trying to control her art and wanted to just let loose on this one. I’ll say she sure did and achieved some interesting looking results and a process I would not be surprised to see copied in the future for the show.

Doreen’s words:

For years I have been trying to push the boundaries of my painting and drawing with little real
success. The results have been disappointing to me, never a real departure from a controlled
representation of nature. Never a true enough representation to make it interesting or
satisfying. This opportunity to push the boundaries of my art-making provided me with a chance
to let go completely of a predetermined image, push the boundaries of the screen printing
technique and then pursue the passages and patterns that resulted. I chose to superimpose
physical elements from nature over an existing photo-lithograph, screenprinting a layer of ink
over both layers and then working into the image with ink and watercolor. This was a departure
from both painting and printing, while combining parts of both.

My understanding of art is that it is the distillation of the experience of living through the artist’s
eyes. No two people experience the world in the same way. Through this past year I have been
privileged to be present at birth and at death. I have studied the shadows and bright points of
light in the film images of my own body, knowing somewhere in the chaos there may be an
already predetermined future. These experiences have given new meaning to a way of working
that feels like the beginning of a satisfying connection to the work I do in the future.

Griffin" width="150" height="150" class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-919" />I’m borrowing a statement from Pattis’ website to get this kicked off:

One of my first memories of being recognized as an artist was in Mr. Snyder’s second grade class. I was six and had completed a pencil drawing of an alligator; my schoolmates crowded around the image ohhing and ahhing with excitement.

The second defining moment came in fourth grade. Sister Joanne, with her thick ankles hanging over her too-tight Oxford shoes, held me after school. She had “caught me” with a simple line drawing of a nude on my homework pad; I stood accused of perversion. My mother, who was called in to retrieve me and the sketch, commented with great praise on the image, and my ability.

These moments had a profound impact: I realized that my talent could be used to conjure emotion within the viewer. I was empowered.

I don’t have much that I can add to this that sums it up as well as Patti already has. I’ve only seen her oil paintings online and my head spins from the colors, shapes, lights vs. darks and the formula behind it all. Patti’s use of vague backgrounds places us right in the paintings themselves to feel the way her animals feel. Visit Patti online and welcome back for the third time to Push Pull Print III. I love screen printing with her. She’s fun, energetic, intelligent and inspiring to be around.

I wanted to get inside their heads and see how their thinking process differs from those of like minded creative individuals…

This is how Push Pull Print began. It has grown beyond my expectations from a single art show to artists and communities wanting a little more. I am pleased and fortunate to have had worked with all artists and individuals involved. That being said the show is about pushing yourself, pushing beyond comfort zones and self imposed creative limitations. Linda Guenste (3 time participating artist) asked what I would be doing for PPP III? Flashes of movies played in my mind of working tirelessly with 20 artists over the past 5 months. Making sure prints were up to our expectations, art was converted to formats we could use, burning screen after screen after screen. Visiting artists, consulting artists, laying out the plans for the pieces, nailing down venues, trying to have the house clean before my wife gets home….the movies fade and there is Linda with the inquisitive look in her eyes….(well?)

I don’t think I have anything left.

Well, I am going to “push” you.

(I’ll probably fall over and break if she does that) – OK I’ll do something….

My concept is this. A screenprinted piece that is as visually perplexing as it is interesting. A piece that conveys interest, but is also perplexing. I needed it to be thought provoking. I needed it to not be immediately apparent. I “turned” to my emotions.

That’s enough foreshadowing. Visit me on SATURDAY!!!!

She’s a contemplater for sure and with not much time to get prepped for the show has really pulled something together that is both visually interesting and intellectually.

(This is just my take and may be totally off ) Sylwia comes off shy and I was surprised to see as one of her images a digitally filtered unclothed body part. I don’t want to give it all away. Leave it up to your imagination. I saw this as a push for Sylwia to step outside a true comfort zone by exposing a potential insecurity. She printed on linen. A soft, flowing fabric which could be construed as somewhat intimate. She presents her final print with a few layers of interesting paper, screen printed linen and a frame that offers you a peek, but a boundary by which is untouchable to feel the delicateness of subject and materials.

Since I was young girl I’ve spent my summers on the bay in Villas, New jersey. I have always been intrigued by horseshoe crabs. I remember picking them up and throwing them back into the water. I decided to make my own pattern on fabric to bring the beauty of the bay into interior design and fashion. The transition from computer design to silk-screening a repetitive pattern was a learning experience that was challenging yet worth while.

With the show just days away I have gotten the opportunity to view Kait’s work. This is her second show with the Push Pull Print group and as a user of Illustrator I enjoy seeing what others create in this program. Kait has illustrated, believe it or not, a beautiful stink bug (for the first PPP event) and now a horseshoe crab for the second. With a great eye for detail and the ability to reduce an organism to lines followed by unique substrate choices she brings something to Push Pull Print that everyone can enjoy.

I’ve known Kim as a photographer and recently found out she is a sculptor and artist. I assumed she would do a photo for her project, but just “what?” And that became the seed that wanted to grow…..

Talking with Kim over the course of the project I want to say her mind did not rest on one topic or subject. The sky was the limit. She would start an idea, run it by me, I would have input and thoughts and she came back with more and then I gave more only to be met with more and more from Kim. How far could the two of us actually push?

With time racing faster than we could create and conceptualize we needed to pick a course of direction. Ironically it went back to one of Kim’s original ideas of doing an iconic symbol of the show’s hosting town – Doylestown, PA. Her print is a culmination of past times being introduced to modern day. Her piece creates so many layers of depth not immediately apparent at a quick glance. She chose to do “The County Theater”. We begin the process of a photograph of The County lit up at night. We then “introduce” or perhaps bring back to life an era gone by with the use of an ageless form of art – screenprint. She printed on a sheet of glass a man dressed in ’50′s (or ’60′s, forgive me Kim if I get this wrong…) clothing and a car from the same era. Now paint a little mystical magic on the backside of the glass, put that in front of The County photograph, frame it out in a black shadow box with soft neons inside it……pretty spectacular piece.

Linda has been with the Push Pull Print group 3 times now and has always delivered thought provoking creations. This includes both subject matter and the substrates they are placed on. Why should I be surprised when the same is held true for Push Pull Print III? I asked no questions when she dropped off a charcoal drawing of a monkey holding a physical tea-bag on a sheet of paper about 18 x 24. Title; “Occurro (which means counter) Evolution”

Counter Evolution……It was this title that “pulled” me away from my own head and forced me to tune in to what was going on around me outside. I tend to live in this world of invention and creation where thoughtful images organize themselves on a stage inside my head. A world only be seen by me until I can lay the thoughts on paper, canvas, sculpture or any form of visual communication. I would have to put my theatrical world on hold while I stepped outside for a few minutes to figure this out.

It didn’t take long for me to figure out that Linda is part genius. Not just this “Tea Party” reference, but her ideas and ability to visually demonstrate them in a way that just makes you stop. I got the opportunity to witness first hand a few weeks ago some of her paintings that were on t-shirts as art prints. They make you stop. They want you to understand. Their visual message is often not what you might think, but something that entirely makes sense perhaps in an abstract sense of thought. Could it be this abstract idea associated with the energy of objects that are familiar that forces our subconscious to stop and think? It’s as if we consciously think we understand, but our inner workings are thinking much deeper to search for her true message.
