As you probably may know by now I am involved in an art show tomorrow night that has asked artists to push their boundaries. To be selected into the show you needed to submit how you plan to do this and then IF selected – GET TO WORK!!!! You have just 2 months to complete your project. I was able to be privy to everyone’s information except Don Millsaps. This was handled by our show hosts at Countryside Frames and Radhouse Studio located at 2 South State Street in Newtown, PA.

I intend to paint an image of the Delaware canal & path in the springtime. The area will be just south of New Hope on the PA side. I plan to place some sort of activity on the path; bikers or people strolling, whatever is appropriate and adds to the picture without distracting from the overall theme. I want to create a feeling of warmth and relaxation on a beautiful day.

If you have not been following the action, this is a concept show where artists were invited to propose their ideas for a landscape. Push themselves outside of their working norm. The show, which features the artworks of 20 artists, is just 2 days away on May 11 to be hosted at Countryside Frames and Radhouse Studio.

It isn’t so much what you have now, but what will you do to push yourself as an artist? We want you to create something entirely new for this show. Push your limits and try something that has burning at you for some time or just go outside your comfort zone and create something entirely new. So when we asked Oz Freedgood his intentions and how he would make this happen he has this to say:

…I like to paint buildings. I’d like to do a series of paintings of the streets of Newtown similar to the painting (above). The beautifully restored Victorians along with the bustling main streets are rich with my favorite subject matter. There is even a great red barn that has wonderful possibilities, that is within city limits.

Oz set himself up perfectly for our challenge. He’s told us he likes to paint buildings and has given us a sample of such. He’d like to do a series based on the streets of Newtown. The rules state it must be a landscape and so we’ve invited Oz to step outside his comfort zone of painting buildings and create such a piece.

Looking forward to seeing what he has chosen to do:

This is a sample of Michael Buszko’s current work. A detailed watercolor. I’m looking forward to seeing what Michael produces for the upcoming “When Blossoms Unfold” landscape art show for a few reasons, but for one in particular. About 10 or so years ago I had gone back to college to train to become a medical illustrator. To sum up my experience it was a modern form of torture for a creative mind. If I can see it I have no trouble rendering it in 2D. But what I really learned deep down was that this was as miserable as it was rewarding. The rewards came in the form of faculty and student acknowledgement of skill and talent. Acceptance into art shows. For me personally it was a task to complete drawings and such. There was no fun in it. I would eventually wander off and begin to explore oil painting while leaving the arduous task of reproduction to others who enjoy that type of work.

When Michael was asked how he plans to “push” his boundaries as an artist he has this to say:

…my work has mostly been of highly rendered objects that are usually still-life or florals. I’m happy with my current body of work, but now that I have a better understanding of the medium, I’m looking to push past my comfort zone.

For the show, I would like to create a landscape that is more gestural and loose in some of it’s elements, but yet contains a balance of the realism, contrast, and color that I enjoy in my current work. I plan to push my creative boundary by letting the unpredictable nature of watercolor just happen and loosen up.

I’m not insinuating that Michael does not enjoy what it is he does and he certainly is good at it. For me personally I like to see the transformation from painting what it is I see to what it is I feel. I’m looking forward to seeing this in Michael’s upcoming piece as well.

The challenge for the show is that artists PUSH their boundaries within a medium they are comfortable with or perhaps try an entirely new medium. When asked of Elizabeth how she proposed to challenge herself she has this to say:

The summer landscape I will be working on will challenge me in that it is in a warmer palette than I have used before, I will be including a structure, and the texture of the landscape will be varied.

The upcoming “When Blossoms Unfold” landscape art show has asked artists to push their boundaries as artists and create an entirely new work of art for this unique art show. 20 artists have been selected to participate in the event and all with the same challenge. Making it a little more difficult is the time constraint on the project. Artists had a little over 2 months to create their art! When Murrie applied to the show this was her challenge to herself:

“I shall attempt to capture that Magical Moment in May when the earth is ready to burst forth with the promise of a new Spring. The sun has finally succeeded in encouraging the first green shoots to show their timid helmets. Hints of color are everywhere, and the signs of rebirth enfuse every heart with joy”.

A little insight into the mind of Ryan Jackson and his intentions for the upcoming landscape art show:

As an artist I am constantly changing and reinventing the way that I work, and enjoy the confines of different contests and juried shows in order to explore new directions and find new creative possibilities. I have moved from photo-realism to pure abstraction, from painting to sculpture to video, and have explored many different themes and subjects in my work. Recently I have been working on a series of paintings that look for new and creative ways to deconstruct images that have been culled from various sources. In the work, I have painted in a faux-naive manner and have tried to incorporate the use of the raw linen into the pieces.

For the upcoming exhibit, having not painted many landscapes, I propose working on a series of photorealistic to semi-photorealistic paintings that take the landscape to task, as a theme to explore while utilizing some of these deconstructive principles. In other words how can I manipulate the image, whether through blurring, cropping, repositioning, or simply through manipulation of the colors, in order to maintain likeness of the original image, while creating something completely new and unique in and of itself. Of that series, one piece will be chosen as the representative of the body of work, for the gallery exhibit.

Lynette Shelley is a Pennsylvania artist specializing in contemporary mixed media paintings and illustrations. Her artwork has been displayed nationally as well as at various regional Philadelphia-area venues. When asked how she plans to “push” herself as an artist for the upcoming show she has this to say:

I mostly create work featuring animals and mythology as the main theme. I have not done landscapes before, so this will be a challenge for me to create something with just pure landscape as the theme…..I would like to explore a forest scene, probably set in Autumn, using lots of different textures and medias to show the different colors of the tree leaves as well as the texture of the tree bark.

Stop by May 11, 2012 to see (in its entirety) what Lynette has created for our landscape art show

She has also been selected to show at our “When Blossoms Unfold” art show. An art show that asks artists to “push the boundaries”.

When asked to describe her style and intentions for this upcoming show she has this to say:

I consider myself a traditional studio painter with a contemporary edge to my work. My primary medium is oil but I do some soft pastel and watercolor also.

I like a bright, vibrant palette and lately it has become ‘warmer’, incorporating a lot of reds, yellows, oranges and purple. I do landscapes, but also like wildlife (especially birds) and still life.

For this show I will be keeping the floral theme in a landscape setting. I would love to create a Landscape in a dreamlike setting, using color to create the mood. I will do my work on 2″ deep canvas, painted all sides.
